NVS/BVS-ABR Najaarssymposium
‘Nuclear power and radiation protection: past, present and future’
fysieke deelname

Het Najaarssymposium zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag 14 november 2025 in het NBC te Nieuwegein (Nederland). Dit evenement kan online of fysiek worden bijgewoond tegen dezelfde kosten. In beide gevallen zal een certificaat van deelname worden afgegeven.

Het Najaarssymposium wordt georganiseerd door de NVS en de BVS-ABR, onze Belgische zustervereniging. Het belooft een internationaal symposium te worden met sprekers uit België, Nederland, Duitsland en van het IAEA in Wenen. Met als titel ‘Nuclear power and radiation protection: past, present and future’ blikken we terug naar de evolutie van het beleid in stralingsbescherming en de toepassing ervan in nucleaire energie, met inbegrip van de impact van een kerncentrale op het leefmilieu. Achtereenvolgens zijn voordrachten voorzien van de Nederlandse toezichthouder ANVS, de Belgische uitbater ENGIE en de Belgische partner IRE.

We blikken ook vooruit richting nieuwe reactortypes. Enerzijds de zogenoemde ‘Small modular reactors’ (SMR), reactoren met een vrij kleine eenheidsgrootte waarvan het de bedoeling is dat deze seriematig in een fabriek worden geproduceerd. Hierdoor kan de bouwtijd op de vestigingsplaats aanzienlijk omlaag wordt gebracht. In de voordracht komen ook de andere voordelen aan de orde en wordt aandacht geschonken aan de specifieke stralingsbeschermingsaspecten. De ochtendsessie wordt afgesloten met een andere nieuwe ontwikkeling ‘de gesmolten zout reactor’. In deze voordacht komen de voordelen/nadelen van dit type reactor aan de orde, de effecten op de stralingsbescherming en de status. 

In de middagsessie wordt de aandacht verlegd naar de ontmanteling van nucleaire installaties. In de eerste presentatie zal nader op de ins en outs van het ontmantelingsplan worden ingegaan. Aansluitend wordt een beschrijving gegeven van de wijze waarop een ontmanteling van een onderzoeksreactor heeft plaatsgevonden en de belangrijkste aandachtspunten, die hieruit naar voren zijn gekomen. Vanuit het IAEA wordt vervolgens het vrijgave concept verder uitgediept met enkele praktische voorbeelden. 

Als laatste stap van de ‘Atomausstieg’ zijn de drie overgebleven kerncentrales in Duitsland buiten bedrijf gesteld. Dat betekent dat er in Duitsland inmiddels veel kennis en ervaring is opgebouwd met het clearance concept. In de presentatie over dit onderwerp zal een samenvatting worden gegeven van de ervaringen tot nu toe. De laatste voordracht van het symposium is ingeruimd voor de burgemeester van de gemeente Borsele. Deze gemeente is genoemd als één van de vier gebieden voor de bouw van twee nieuwe kerncentrales in Nederland. In de voordracht zal worden ingegaan op de rol van de burgemeester in het proces.

Accreditatie / Registratiepunten
Zowel voor het fysiek volgen of via de livestream wordt een certificaat van deelname afgegeven, goed voor registratiepunten in de (Nederlandse) categorie ‘Bijwonen symposia’. Voorwaarde voor ontvangst van het certificaat van deelname is dat je minimaal 90% van het symposium aanwezig bent. Het certificaat wordt na afloop per e-mail toegezonden.
 
Locatie
Het symposium wordt gehouden in het NBC, Blokhoeve 1, 3438 LC Nieuwegein. Deze locatie is gemakkelijk te bereiken vanaf A12, A2 en A27 met een ruime (gratis) parkeergelegenheid voor de deur. Deelnemers die liever van het openbaar vervoer gebruik maken, kunnen op Utrecht Centraal de sneltram richting Nieuwegein nemen. Deze vertrekt iedere 7 min. en heeft een halte Zuilenstein voor het congrescentrum. Reistijd ca. 15 min.
 
Tentoonstelling
Tijdens het symposium zullen verschillende bedrijven hun diensten en producten presenteren. Ook kunt u bij hen terecht voor uw specifieke vragen of wens.

The Autumn Symposium will take place on Friday 14 November 2025 at the NBC in Nieuwegein (Netherlands). This event can be attended online or physically at the same cost. In either case, a certificate of attendance will be issued.

The Autumn Symposium is organised by the NVS and the BVS-ABR, our Belgian sister association. It promises to be an international symposium with speakers from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and from the IAEA in Vienna. Titled “Nuclear power and radiation protection: past, present and future”, we will look back at the evolution of policy in radiation protection and its application in nuclear power, including the impact of a nuclear power plant on the environment. Successive presentations are provided by the Dutch regulator ANVS, Belgian operator ENGIE and Belgian partner IRE.
We also look ahead towards new reactor types. On the one hand, the so-called “Small modular reactors” (SMR), reactors with a relatively small unit size that are intended to be mass-produced in a factory. This can significantly reduce construction time at the site. The presentation will also cover the other benefits and focus on the specific radiation protection aspects. The morning session will conclude with another new development “the molten salt reactor”. The lecture will discuss the advantages/disadvantages of this type of reactor, its effects on radiation protection and its status.

In the afternoon session, the focus will shift to nuclear decommissioning. The first presentation after lunch will focus on the ins and outs of the decommissioning plan. This will be followed by a description of the way in which a research reactor was dismantled and the main points of attention that emerged. From the IAEA, the clearance concept is then further explored with some practical examples.
As the final step of the “Atomausstieg”, the three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany have been shut down. This means that a lot of knowledge and experience has now been built up in Germany with the clearance concept. The presentation on this topic will summarise the experiences so far. The final contribution to the symposium is reserved for the mayor of the municipality of Borsele. This municipality has been named as one of the four areas for the construction of two new nuclear power plants in the Netherlands. The presentation will discuss the mayor's role in the process.

Accreditation / Registration Points 
A certificate of participation will be issued for both in-person and livestream attendance, qualifying for registration points in the (Dutch) category ‘Attendance at symposia’. To receive the certificate, you must attend at least 90% of the symposium. The certificate will be sent via email after the event.

Location 
The symposium will be held at the NBC, Blokhoeve 1, 3438 LC Nieuwegein. This venue is easily accessible from the A12, A2, and A27 highways and offers ample (free) parking directly in front of the building. Participants who prefer public transport can take the express tram from Utrecht Central Station toward Nieuwegein. This tram departs every 7 minutes and stops at Zuilenstein, which is right by the conference center. Travel time is approximately 15 minutes.
